Kansas Reading First

Kansas Reading First - Grant Recipients

KSDE received a total of 41 million dollars over six years that was made available to qualifying districts and schools across Kansas through the Reading First Grant Program. Schools that were identified as not making Adequate Yearly Progress or on School Improvement by the State were able to apply for these monies. Qualifying school districts were required to identify the eligible schools in their district based on the following criteria:

  1. Schools having the highest percentage or number of students not reading on grade level as demonstrated by the scores from the second grade diagnostic assessment (percent of students not on grade level = 50% or more, number of students not on grade level = 106 or more.)
  2. Schools that have been identified for Title I school improvement. School districts were required to give preference to schools that had been on school improvement for at least 2 years.
  3. Schools having the highest percentage or number of formula children identified for Title I services (percent of formula students = 22.91% or more, number of formula students = 200 or more.)

Schools must meet criterion (1) and/or (2), to be eligible for a Reading First grant. School districts were notified by KSDE as to their eligibility. After promoting and running a competitive grant process, the funds were distributed to quality proposals that showed the most promise for successful implementation, and for raising student achievement.
